Let's Hope It Doesn't Go To Their Heads [Austin Monthly's Bachelor Issue]

Coming soon to a newsstand near you, Austin Monthly's annual "Bachelor" edition. The glossy features ten of Austin's finest man meat after what the magazine called an agonizing decision process. The year's list includes a Survivor contestant, an FBI agent and Austinist friend, James Moody - legendary rambler, owner of Mohawk and proprietor of the upcoming Fun Fun Fun Fest. We feel honored to be among such esteemed company 'cuz we know Moody (not Jim, not James, not Jimmy - just Moody) is good people. There really aren't enough words to describe him: genuine, witty, loyal, intelligent and fun. Oh, and ladies, it doesn't hurt that he can be quite the charmer and easy on the eyes.

Having finally settled in Austin a few years ago, Moody turned a doomed club location at 9th and Red River into what is now a time-honored Austin music venue and he is constantly thinking about ways to make Austin a more livable and enjoyable city. Ever the promoter, Moody sees Austin as one great, big party where he is the host whose duty is to ensure every one of his guests have a great time. What's not to love?

The other bachelors are: Joe Dowdle (Survivor contestant, network specialist), Kirk Kuchner (FBI counterterrorism intelligence analyst), David Hancock (CEO of Hodyon Manufacturing), John Galindo (chef/owner of Cedar Grove Steakhouse), Steve Glazer (founder and owner of Strum Music School), Volma Robert (Bobby) Overton III (expo and events coordinator at SPIbelt), Marc English (Marc English Design), Tony Manuel (anesthesiologist), Steven Derek Johnson (financier).

"a time-honored Austin music venue"?!?
Are you fucking high on PCP??
I propose replacing that phrase with something much more firmly based in reality, like "the primary example of everything that is currently wrong with Austin's music scene".

Happy that y'all cover all kinds of art in and around Austin, but seriously--quit being part of the problem.

C'mon meanhippy, the Mohawk isn't everything that is wrong with Austin's music scene nor is it a time honored music venue. Let's not blow it out of proportion here just because the original author did!

Mohawk has got pretty solid sound when compared to the rest of the Red River haunts (especially outside) and their bartenders, drink prices, etc are all pretty good too.

It would be nice if they could fix their A/C and/or upgrade it though, because the inside -- even before it gets packed -- is way too hot nowadays. Doesn't matter if it's 90 something at night, plenty of other places keep it cool enough to still wear jeans and not be drenched in sweat after 2 minutes.

mean hippy : ANGRY, JEALOUS? WTF?

1st: If you are a mean hippy, what type of music do you like, some stoner death metal (which I like!) or something?
--------------
Anyways, I think Moody & Transmission have done wonders for Red River, Austin & Downtown.
Remember going to Beerland and being asked 30 times by the time you got to the door if you wanted some CRACK?

THIS GEM of knowledge--- "the primary example of everything that is currently wrong with Austin's music scene"
Wow, if you dont like the Mohawk DONT GO!
Also, I bet you think FFFun Fest suks and ACL is the best thing ever with their VIP BS? right?

Just dont hate, and enjoy Kenny G @ Austin Music Hall @ 89.50 + fees with your bu++plug as your date.

LONG LIVE THE HAWK!

Oh, and Moody great pic. Priceless

And see ladies, he looks like such a great listener, no?

Thank you, Colonel, for unwittingly underlining the exact point I was making.
You have identified yourself as the standard issue douchenozzle who frequents the 'cool' music clubs in town.
You and your ilk seem to be doing your level best to choke the raw beauty from this city by celebrating the commodification of the true freak spirit into just another $5 beer, just another sold out show you talk and text through. Bravo.
When I think about the machine that Transmission represents, the one that turns gold into shit, I suppose I have to agree with you--they certainly *have* done wonders around here....

You know they sell Coors Light in Omaha/Indianapolis/Tampa too, right? Rents are much cheaper there--please go back home.

He deserves it. Moody is a great guy.

Such hostility. "the primary example of everything that is currently wrong with Austin's music scene"? When's the last time you went down to 6th Street? Get an earful down there and then head back up to the Hawk and tell me where the problem lies. That club is always getting bands that won't or don't play anywhere else in town. A place where you can also watch live wrestling once in a while on Red River? Are you kidding me? Yes, please. Can I have another?

Sometimes we all forget that music and bars are about having fun and not being pretentious. So, if you don't like something, don't go. I have never felt that the Hawk was about a popularity contest or being 'cool'. Sounds like meanhippy needs to actually go to the Hawk.

Wait a minute. I don't need to defend it. There's no argument. meanhippy never actually told us what made it so bad. Just one of those bitter Austinites who says they lived here before it was cool and wishes everyone would leave. You complain about everything, but are never lifting a finger to help improve it.

Keep it up Mohawk. Ya' know we love ye.

Oh yeah. And James Moody is aces in my book, aces. A rare gem.

Jesus, brat, so he boned you in the green room; haven't you given him enough lip-service?
Anyway, I still haven't gotten over the hawks sewage spewing problems from last year. You guys get soaked in coke-head-shit-squirts and then tell me you love the place! The staff is much friendlier now, but I'd much rather get my stiff-ones next door at Deville.

p.s. i hear Moody drinks at Deville too.

1) - "douchenozzle"(c'mon...sad try at an insult, you can do better, no?) I have worked downtown and for Moody at times and he is an awesome guy to work for.
Have you WORKED to support live music in Austin???
2) I actually do not frequent clubs to be cool, I watch the BAND , not the people.
3) I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN TEXAS and I can drink whatever I want from Lone Star to Chimay. Yet, another sad try at an insult. I would drink a Coors Light with someone from Omaha/Indianapolis/Tampa. Sad, you think you are better than those people.

*** I bet you live in the Condos across the street and just hate the Mohawk, I cannot wait... 2 THE SWORD shows August 28 & 29. Mark your Calendar meanhippy and maybe you should go back to California (at least that is where it sounds like you are from)

Good try, but just go fuk yourself and quit trying to cockblock the Texas Monthly Bachelors.
