Weekend Music Preview: Foot Patrol’s 80's Dance Party @ Scoot Inn [Saturday]

Surely we’re fast approaching a point where parties featuring all things 90's will be the ideal event for our dose of nostalgia -- events where music from the likes of Destiny’s Child and Chemical Brothers furnishes the dance floor, grunge-era flannel shirts and Dolores O’Riordan and Fred Durst look-alikes dictate fashion sense, and Radiohead’s Ok Computer is the soundtrack for the last hour. And of course, everyone smells like teen spirit and does the “Macarena” all night.

For now, stick to the beloved celebrations of the 80's, with a truly enticing one scheduled for this Saturday at Scoot Inn. Foot Patrol has previously dazzled us with many a Prince cover. This evening, the local funk outfit takes a stab at hits from the 80's. We’ve been promised renditions of 20 songs from the decade, including “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” But that’s not all, not even close to it. There is a costume contest. And should you go all out and bust out the Molly Ringwald or Andrew McCarthy in you, there is a John Hughes themed photo-booth courtesy of Jounetsu Photography. Wow! Plus DJ Mahealani will be on hand to spin many, many more songs we love. The $10 price of admission might be considered a tad steep but it’s all for the noble cause of aiding a talented local band put its best foot forward -- the cover charge will go towards helping Foot Patrol fund its first N.Y.C. tour.

Emo’s is hosting a stellar show featuring quite a few local luminaries on Saturday night. One of our favorite pop bands in town, Golden Bear will be headlining this free event on the outside stage, presented by The Deli Austin. Low Line Caller, The Always Already, New Roman Times, and Wine and Revolution will also be performing. We’re excited to report that Golden Bear is currently recording its third full-length, due later this year.

Head down to the The Continental Club on Friday to celebrate the launch of Patricia Vonne’s iPhone application. The app, developed by local firm AVAI Ventures, Inc., includes all 34 songs from the Texan songstress’ three albums (Patricia Vonne, Guitars And Castanets, and Firebird) along with nine videos and news updates. All for a mere $1.99! Vonne’ set is scheduled to start at 10 p.m.; recent Pachanga Fest performers Charanga Cakewalk headline.
