Free Summer Camps At Austin Bat Cave: Register Now!

Austin Bat Cave, a non-profit writing and tutoring center for kids, is hosting two free summer camps during these last few precious weeks of summer vacation. The organization focuses on connecting a diverse population of young writers and learners with a vibrant community of adult volunteers in Austin. Understanding that public school teachers are the hardest-working people in town, they strive to be a resource, mobilizing volunteers to help teachers accomplish what they might not be able to accomplish on their own.

The first camp, "What is Art?," is July 27-31 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Blanton Museum. During the week-long workshop, campers will explore the nature of relating to and creating art. They will take journeys both literally and figuratively through writing—touring the outdoor sculpture gardens, the indoor galleries and the worlds and minds of the work and artists. The camp is open to 9th-12th graders.

The second camp focuses on the Ethnography and Oral History of Clarksville and takes place August 10-14 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. This camp is geared toward 5th-8th graders and will explore the stories of the historic Clarksville area. Students will tromp around Sweet Home Baptist Church and Enfield Drug, both institutional pillars of life in Clarksville, and learning the art of the interview.

Both camps still have spots available, so register soon. Call 524-1489, email info@austinbatcave.org or visit www.austinbatcave.org for more information.
