No More Feeding the Meter: Parking Pay Stations Coming Next Week

Fumbling around for change to feed the meter will soon be a thing of the past in Austin.

Beginning on July 22, you can use your credit or debit card to pay for on-street parking. Pay stations will appear first on Congress Avenue, with all 3,800 meters replaced by Thanksgiving. Each pay station will replace 8-11 meters.

And in keeping with Austin's eco-friendly vibe, the pay stations will run on solar power with batteries that last three years.

If you're old-school, you can still use coins at the new pay stations, which will allow you to pay for up to three hours at most locations and up to five hours at others. You also can get a printed receipt that allows you to take the remaining time on that ticket to another parking spot.

And, as parallel parking spaces no longer need to be defined by each meter, you can squeeze into a block as long as there's space.

More details on the plan are available at the City of Austin website.

Ok, I've got to say the "squeeze in" rule is a really nice addition.

It is for people with common sense. For the vast majority, I'm not so sure.
