Le Diamant Brut: Sin Fang Bous & The Bubbles

SIN FANG BOUS

What’s the Deal: There are bands you need to hear, and then there are bands you need to hear. Sin Fang Bous is definitely in the latter camp. The outfit is the handy work of Icelandic 20-something music man Sindri Mar Sigfusson, who you could recall as a founding father of Reykjavik’s folk-pop pride, Seabear. Sin Fang Bous is Sigfusson’s solo project, and he just released the debut full-length, Clangour, this year to nowhere near enough praise. The music is full of imagery, thanks in part to Sigfusson’s choice of singing in English over his native tongue, samples, and sound effects abound giving the project a densely layered yet well constructed sound.

A visually stunning and creative video exists for “Clangour and Flutes” which features trees and flutes sprouting from Sigfusson’s head and takes place between the lines of notebook paper. In this one, patches of vocals form a vibrant, handsome quilt while random noises like flutes all playing different numbers dazzle and dance.

Something Interesting: He was reportedly working on his debut album for Sin Fang Bous at the same time as he and the rest of Seabear were working on their next recording for release this year.

Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “Catch the Light” and “Sinker Ship”

THE BUBBLES

What’s the Deal: Voted one of the nine local bands to watch in 2009 by The Austin Chronicle, these local golden boys make some of the most charming psychedelic power-pop around. They aren’t all bubble gum and lollipops though. They do have a grittier, distorted sound between catchy choruses. They’ve enjoyed some local popularity, but maybe it’s about time to set them free. The Austin music community can be extremely nurturing, but bands also have a tendency to get stuck here. Maybe, with the follow-up to their debut full-length, Super Psychedelic Sound Explosion, the quartet will catch the breeze and sail above and beyond the low tree tops of Austin.

One of the sweet spots on the debut album is the twinkling melody of “Lullaby”. The dreamy, star-gazer with gently ringing guitar strings, misty background harmony and soft drum raps moves eventually into rougher terrain, gritty guitar and a faster pace. “Late Long Night” is a tune often picked from the pack for its steady, reliable melody building to burst.

Something Interesting: Coming up, they’re playing Emo’s on July 24th with PlayRadioPlay and The Secret Handshake as well as Antone’s on August 20th for The Daze CD release show.
