Le Diamant Brut: Blind Man's Colour & Frantic Clam
What’s the Deal: They are a young duo - Kyle Wyss and Orha Chettri - making some elemental electronically inclined music fattened up with sounds and effects and landing somewhere in the vicinity of Animal Collective jacked up with psychedelic experimentalism. These two St. Petersburg, FL college students have received shimmering endorsements from a few blogs recently including Kanye West’s. They’ve released self-produced recordings in the past, but their new CD/LP, Season Dreaming, is due out August 18th on Kanine Records.
One of the tracks everyone’s been buzzing about is “Jimmy Dove”. It’s like swimming slow-mo, backward through an ocean past bright yellow polka-dotted unicorn fish, mermen riding seahorses, and the occasional sunken lost city. The track is full of deeply echoing vocals, bass drum thuds, outstretched guitars, various keyboard sounds, bloops, whirrs, and a whole host of sounds we don’t have onomatopoeias for.
Something Interesting: This band is a great example of the effectiveness of music blogs and electronic tastemakers doing just that, making tastes. Everyone cried out for the band to be signed and have an album released, and now Kanine is doing just that.

What’s the Deal: Sure, it’s not the most flattering band name in the world, but after listening to a handful of the Austin band’s tunes, it starts to fit and pretty soon the possibility of any other moniker being assigned to this quartet quickly goes out the window. The glam side of the group has been well-noted, but there’s also a fun, garage pop angle and lighthearted indie weirdness in abundance. They’ve released two EPs, the latest one being Anatomica, which has seen its share of local favor.
“Fort Worthless” is off their latest, and it gets an extra point and a half for the pun. There was a time when puns like this were the highest form of humor. It’s a shrieking stomper of a track that’s just looking for a good time. High-pitched, layered vocals adorn heavy bass and beats and a sharp guitar riff.
Something Interesting: You can catch these guys playing at a local bar near you really soon. Check the calendar at joints like Flamingo Cantina, Creekside, Beerland, and Trophy’s.
