New Release Tuesday: Wilco (The Album) & Contest
The album opens with a love note to the fans, which is perhaps an explanation of the self-referential title. "Wilco will love you baby," croons Tweedy as the band rolls through Verlaine-esque guitars and familiar Wilco-ishness. Hatched in January of this year, Tweedy & Co. find themselves covering a lot of familiar ground on Wilco, and at times the familiarity and comfort of this fact makes us a little restless. Overal, however, this is another great release from the band (their seventh) with highlights including “Bull Black Nova,” a monstrous jam that finds guitarist Nels Cline really stretching out. A duet with Feist ("You and I") also sticks out as particularly good. This collection of undeniably solid tunes is great partnered with the Ashes of American Flags DVD, which chronicles the band's tour in 2008.
