Annual "Can’t Stop the Serenity" Plus “Dr. Horrible” Screening Fundraiser at Drafthouse Lake Creek

"Can’t Stop the Serenity" is a global fundraising effort that benefits Equality Now, a nonprofit that works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world. Like its name implies, the annual event is centered around a screening of writer/director/cult-hero Joss Whedon's sci-fi film, Serenity, which was based on the short-lived TV show, Firefly.

This year's Can’t Stop the Serenity in Austin is coordinated by the Austin Browncoats and takes place on Sunday at Alamo Lake Creek. As an added bonus, they'll also include a special "Austin-area big screen premiere" of all three episodes of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," Whedon's eminently enjoyable short-form online musical comedy. The Hugo Award-nominated series is about a mad scientist (Dr. Horrible, played by Neil Patrick Harris) who attempts to join the elite "Evil League of Evil," whilst wooing an idealistic young lass who works at a homeless shelter (Penny, played by former Austinite Felicia Day) and fending off his arch-nemesis, the narcissistic meathead known as Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillion of Serenity).

Tickets for the noon and 10 p.m. screening are still available online for $15, and will likely sell out before week's end. The 5 p.m. screening is already sold out. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Kids Need to Read Foundation, a children's literacy non-profit organization that helps with Austin's underprivileged schools, libraries and shelters.
