Weekend Music Preview: Meat Puppets @ The Parish [Saturday]

The Meat Puppets, currently comprised of Curt and Cris Kirkwood and Ted Marcus, have been churning out stellar rock albums for almost three decades. Inspired by punk and hardcore, the brothers Kirkwood formed the band in 1980 in Phoenix with Derrick Bostrom on drums and dropped the In A Car EP on World Imitation a year later. Greg Ginn (Black Flag) took a fancy to the band’s sound and signed them to his label, SST Records. The first six Meat Puppets full-lengths and the Out My Way EP were all released on SST; In A Car was re-released by the California based label in 1985.

The band’s most lauded record was 1984’s Meat Puppets II; Nirvana’s Unplugged covers of “Plateau” and “Lake Of Fire” off the album would propel the Puppets onto the radar of mainstream America in 1993. The band had already garnered a larger audience thanks to an opening slot on Nirvana’s In Utero tour. Their expanding fan base was further fueled by the radio hit “Backwater” and 1994’s Too High To Die (London Records) duly became the band’s most successful album to date. The original trio’s last release was 1995’s No Joke!

The next few years were filled with tragedy and personal issues for the band members, leading to an inevitable break. The Kirkwoods rebounded in 2007 with new drummer Marcus and a new album, Rise To Your Knees (Anodyne Records). Last month, they released their twelfth full-length Sewn Together on Megaforce Records. Expect to hear plenty of new material along with some classics tomorrow night at The Parish; get your tickets here or fill out the form for a chance to go on us:
