New Release Tuesday: Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison

George Harrison Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison (EMI)

Sadly, the Dark Horse still hasn't received a proper collection of his work. This album (one of a string of half-hearted EMI releases) includes a handful of songs considered by many to be some of his greatest, but offers them as "2009 digitally remastered" versions that either a) poop on the Spector-produced originals or b) poop on the Harrison-produced versions. Pulling mainly from his epic inaugural solo effort All Things Must Pass, Let It Roll sloppily churns out lackluster remasters of hits "What Is Life", "Isn't It a Pity" and "My Sweet Lord", throwing in gratuitous live versions of Beatles tunes and -- naturally -- opening track "I've Got My Mind Set On You." Completists will still grab this one because of the live tracks (we're never content with just forty live versions of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"), but we're still waiting for either a reissue of The Best of Dark Horse (a now out-of-print collection) or a truly curated Wingspan-esque box of Harrison's gems. Bootlegs Beware of Abkco, Completed Rarities, and the Yesterday session with Bob Dylan should all resurface in legitimate form, and albums like Thirty Three & 1/3, Dark Horse and Extra Texture all deserve a deep-track listen by potential curators. Until the Dark Horse label itself offers a greatest compilation, we'll probably be left in want.
