Well, here’s your chance to one-up those film nerds. Check out the Coen Brothers’ first film, Blood Simple, tomorrow at a screening sponsored by the Texas Film Commission and the Austin Film Festival as part of the “Made in Texas Film Series.” This 1985 gem is a quirky neo-noir chock full of hard-boiled dialog uttered by dudes too tough to care. It’s a crazy joyride through all the usual twists and turns of the genre, like cheating spouses, dirty money, double crosses—you know, the usual.
No one will argue Joel and Ethan Coen’s distinguished film pedigree. O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo (screening later this month), The Big Lebowski should we go on? Because frankly, if at this point you don’t realize that you love these guys’ films, then we don’t know what we could say to change your mind.
Like renting a classic Orson Welles movie and wondering what all the hubbub is about, you could take in all the “Coen-esque” signature style, if you want—after all, it’s not that much different from any other movie today—OR... you can take a moment and realize that this is where those cool shots with which we’ve grown so familiar came from in the first place.
With outstanding performances from character actors whose faces you know better than their names, classic lines you can’t help but walk out quoting, and the aforementioned creative cinematography courtesy of a young Barry Sonnenfeld, this is a film that every Coens-head must see. Hey, even if you’re not the biggest film nerd in your crew, at least you can hold up your end of the conversation.
