Preview: Annie at Bass Concert Hall
This weekend, Annie appears at the Bass Concert Hall. Part of the Broadway Across America series, this is the 30th anniversary tour of a production that took home the Tony for Best Musical in 1977, and earned a nomination for Best Revival in 1997. The story is a classic rags-to-riches tale of a precocious orphan adopted by the uber-wealthy, uber-capitalist Oliver Warbucks in Depression-era America. Making her national tour debut is Madison Kerth as Annie and returning as Daddy Warbucks is David Barton.
There's no exaggeration in saying that Annie is one of the quintessential stage musicals. The irrepressible red-headed heroine has been part of the American cultural landscape for nearly a century, first appearing in the comics in the 20s, then in a wildly popular radio show in the 30s (“Drink more Ovaltine” anyone?), and has had several film incarnations in addition to the long-running stage musical. Even the most hardcore anti-musical cynics cannot claim to not know the refrain of “Tomorrow.” Then, as now, it is truly a story and a show for all ages.
Annie plays at Bass Concert Hall from June 5-7; June 5 at 8pm, June 6 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., June 7 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets and info at UT PAC's website.
