...and proceed to throw down 21st century soul jams like nobody's business. Not much of a joke, really, but this pair of Drag City folk heroes aren't the type of musicians to be taken lightly. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, a.k.a. former child actor, Palace Music auteur, and Kanye West video star Will Oldham, is touring in support of his 200th album, Beware, and it's a doozy, packed with mellowed country-rock hymns delivered with Oldham's peculiar, melodic-yet-unsentimental vocal style.
Neil Michael Hagerty, whom many of us remember fondly from his days in the immortal Royal Trux, has been recording and touring under his own name since 2001 and with his band The Howling Hex since 2003. The man wastes no time: that period has seen the release of no less than nine (9) full-lengths LPs, not counting out-of-print records and the several volumes of writing under the man's belt. Hagerty's solo sound recalls the Trux's more stoned and Stones-y moments, particularly from their Thank You album--in other words, the good stuff--and Hagerty's pixillated, shred-minimalist style remains as impressive as ever.
