Au Revoir Simone’s signature sound is created with three vintage Casios, a drum machine, and silky vocals producing melancholy yet frank harmonies. All of these sound wrapped in gauze, creating the effect of an impressionist statement in which, despite the almost military crispness of their lyrics, there are no sharp edges to be found.
Their latest offering, Still Night, Still Light, contains not a single disappointing track. Much of its lyrics are dauntingly layered to match the intertwining layers of keyboard played by all three band members, Erika Forster, Annie Hart and Heather D’Angelo. Piercing their incredible sonic composure, the opening track, “All or Nothing,” perfectly captures the schizophrenic bedlam of leave-taking: "I'm moving on- I hope you're coming with me.”
Still Night, Still Light has been accused of “playing it safe,” but this is an accusation that misses the point, being aimed at such an imperviously cool sonic construction. After all, isn’t there something undeniably gutsy about a band who seems not to care at all whether they play it safe?
We here at Austinist are giving away tickets to Saturday’s show at The Mohawk, which will open with Austin’s own highly magnetic Oh No! Oh My! and the searing elegiac beauty of the Antlers. The Antlers will not long remain everyone’s favorite unheard-of indie band, so this is not a show to be missed. Enter your information below for a chance to win tickets—and the adorable poster shown here—to commemorate this delicious lineup.
