New Release Tuesday: New York Dolls & Cass McCombs

Also out this week: Neil Young's Neil Young Archives, Vol. 1: 1963-1972, spanning the first decade of the legendary artist's career and featuring eight CDs with loads of previously unreleased and rare material. Another album we recommend checking out is Elvis Costello's latest, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, produced by T Bone Burnett and currently streaming on Costello's Web site.

Cass McCombs Catacombs (Domino)

McCombs' fourth full-length finds the artist still firmly planted in the late '70s Americana wistfulness we've come to love. Skipping whatever fads have caught the fleeting attention of the masses, McCombs focuses on textures and lyrical poetry, doing his part to continue the traditions of American songwriting. His aversion to settling down in one place (he's constantly moving, most recently to LA though skipping around when the music calls for it) also leaves its mark on the songs here, as a wide cast of characters make appearances through the tracks. The mystery and wit he effortlessly pens continues, and we look forward to his next trip to Austin. Watch the video for the first single, Dreams Come True Girl at Domino, featuring Hollywood legend Karen Black.

New York Dolls Cause I Sez So (Atco)

Though this reconstituted version of the '70s glam rock band doesn't stack up as well as we'd like, there are glimmers of hope and sass on album. Produced by Todd Rundgren, the '70s songwriting icon who produced their legendary 1973 debut, Cause I Sez So takes the band back to their Malcolm McLaren days, pre-Sex Pistols. Their influence is staggering, but here we find the band indulging in their own interests. Stumbling through a melting pot of genres and influences, the record offers bits of Latino balladry, reggae stomp, pure rock and lots of swagger. As usual, the centerpiece is David Johansen (now 59) and though his gritty howl has aged, it still offers the same force as always. They're in town on June 6, performing with Black Joe Lewis at Emo's.
