At one time a job in auto manufacturing was like a typical job in the service sector -- McDonald's etc. -- today, with few benefits and little prestige. The unions changed that and turned auto manufacturing into pathway to the middle class.

I wonder if the next iteration of the US auto industry will continue to be a way for people without college degrees to reach a middle class lifestyle. Or will the new auto industry soon rival the service sector for low-paying jobs with few benefits? The unions are taking a hit in this. I wonder if they'll be strong enough to put up a struggle.
