More Details Emerge on Spiro's Shooting

The hip-hop group behind this morning's shooting outside Spiro's has now been identified as the "LG Allstarz" from La Grange, Texas.

Booked to open last night's show, they failed to show up for the gig, finally arriving at the club around closing time and demanding to have the headliners' set cut short. As the Statesman reports, show promoter Ramone “Sicc” Stewart denied their request, which caused one of the group members to take a swing at him. After the scuffle, during which Stewart himself was stabbed in the arm, the group was tossed out by bouncers.

News 8 Austin has a quote from APD Officer David Socho, one of the first authorities to arrive on the scene. "We heard a lot of loud pops, I assumed at first it was firecrackers, there were so many pops," he said. "It sounded close to Seventh and Red River … when I got up here, I was flagged down that there was a woman that was shot in the stomach."

"As I got up to her, there was a lot of chaos in front of club Spiro's, and I realized there was two or three other people down, and while I was trying to tend to her, calling for EMS, I realized there were two more inside the club that were shot inside the doorway.”

Contrary to earlier reports, the woman who was shot in the stomach is now listed in critical condition. The suspects have been identified but remain at large.

Incidents like this is why I hate the current state of affairs on 6th street. Why must Austin be known for just a party spot with loads of bars up and down the street? What a waste of real estate, it doesn't do anything for the people that actually live here except bring in idiots from out of town who could care less about our city. Shut all these stupid bars down and turn downtown into something the people who live here actually want to live with. Austin has one of the nicest downtown strips and it's sad to see it's completely wasted on shitty bars filled with shitty music. Maybe this incident will finally wake people up and realize we don't have to have 40+ bars on one street, its STUPID.

And what the hell is up with APD letting these guys get away, police headquarters is literally a block away... what a complete failure on behalf of APD. Pathetic...

Beatyou:

Your comment shows your general ignorance of the downtown scene and indeed it's economic impact on the city.

First of all, this club is in the Red River district, not on 6th. Second, Spiro's itself is anomalous to the area, the only ghetto trash club among a strip of live music venues that rarely have criminal troubles, and certainly nothing of this latest variety.

Spiro's is one unfortunate and unrepresentative example of an otherwise safe and beneficial club scene. The difference in crowd is patently obvious to anyone who walks by there on a Friday. When you have 172 calls to police from one club (as noted in original news8 piece), it is clear where the problem is. Instead of calling for a systemic condemnation, empower the police to address the bad apple.

I would also be interested to see what use you would find for the downtown area that could best the over $600 million dollars and 11,000+ jobs that the music scene ">contributes to Austin annually. To pretend our entire downtown area is just a playground for drunk tourists is either misinformed or disingenuous.

Well, beatyou , you must be one of the condo loving slugs that is destroying this city. Waste of real estate you say? What do you think is the bread and butter of this city? Oh yeah you have no idea. You must live in a condo. I work downtown and I love this city, if Spiro's doesn't get shut down, it will. If you want your condo loving community, move to Seattle, or go back to the rock you unfortunately crawled your music hating ass from... Austin does not want people like you.

thank you lg all starz for finally getting spiro's shut down.

if only you coulda pulled those shenanigans during the relays....
