What’s the Deal: Gaby Moreno is a Guatemalan singer/songwriter living in Los Angeles. Her bilingual tunes blend acoustic, soul and pop into a sound that’s strong enough to win the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, which is part of the Maxell Song of the Year awards.
Her debut album, Still the Unknown, came out just last year, and halfway through it there’s a song that catches Gaby at a particularly beautiful spot. “Amapola” features just piano and her sweetly melodic vocals leaping from Spanish to English, and that’s all it needs.
Something Interesting: Moreno is playing the Pachanga Latino Music Festival on May 30th at Fiesta Gardens alongside Michael Salgado, Mexican Institute of Sound, Ocote Soul Sounds, The Chris Perez Band, Brownout and more.
Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “Wrong Side of the Road” and “Since You Came Along”

What’s the Deal: Two of the members of this trio you may remember from their days in Austin’s Sound Team, and the band’s name actually comes from one of their songs. The band - Matthew Oliver, Jordan Johns and A. Leonard Jones - recently made their debut. They’re brand spanking new, and their music is a little hard to track down in the digital world. Their sound is more stripped down than the Sound Team days in both music and size, which leaves Oliver’s vocals to really shine amidst some guitar-driven and poppy tunes.
You can make your official introductions to the brand new band and their music Thursday at Beerland where they will be playing with Harlem, Wine and Revolution and Ripe.
Something Interesting: You can check out the inspiration for the band’s name here. It’s a video of the Sound Team crew at Good Records in Dallas performing “TV Torso”.
Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: (Shrug) Go to the show and take your pick.
