Creationism-Loving Head of State Board of Education Gets Voted Off

As anticipated, the State Senate struck down Gov. Perry's attempted re-nomination of creationism-touting Sunday school teacher Don McLeroy as chairman of the State Board of Education.

Lest you think this is all good news, consider Cynthia Dunbar (R-Richmond), who's believed to be Perry's likeliest second choice for the chairmanship. A graduate of Pat Robertson's Regent University School of Law in Virginia, she recently published a book entitled One Nation Under God: How the Left Is Trying to Erase What Made Us Great, in which she argues that government should be run by a "biblical litmus test," and, more bizarrely, that the establishment of public schools was "tyrannical." Prior to last November, Dunbar also made the awesome claim that then-presidential candidate Barack Obama would "impose martial law" if elected. As the board member representing District 10, part of her jurisdiction includes Williamson County, and a portion of Travis County.

All I can say is Thank God! This guy is a freaking kook. His latest rants have been ... UGH.

Dunbar scares me as well, but hopefully they will shoot her down as well. I am in the part of Travis county that is covered by her District, and it really is disappointing that she doesn't listen to her constituency.

The great thing is not this defeat. This defeat is more symbolic. It shows that the ultra-right wing of the Republican party no longer has a solid enough voting block to get everything it wants.

Even in Texas we might be seeing the emergence of a more moderate Republican party.

Of course, it might also show that the balance of power has finally shifted from rural Texas to urban Texas.
