Skinny jeans, a dance beat, a major label deal, allusions to a "cocaine brunch" and songs about rich girls...what year is this again?
The Virgins are very 2009, and American, though you might have to do a double take. The sound lands somewhere between the new rock explosion of 2001 and Spandau Ballet, and the boys have scored lucky breaks opening up for Sonic Youth and are listed to play this year's ACL festival.
On tour with The Virgins is Lissy Trullie, another connoisseur of fast beats and quickly strummed guitars. A few writers have confused Trullie and her band for the second coming of Television, but their energetic hooks (see "Boy Boy") are enough to recommend a listen. Also appearing is the sultry slink of Anya Marina, an L.A.-based songwriter who has recently toured with Jason Mraz .
