Manchester Orchestra starts out most of their material with passionate, peaceful little chunks of harmony; then, like a chainsaw to a tree, the sound is quickly interrupted by raw earthy screamo licks. The band's mix is definitely indie rock, but it totally stands out from many others in the genre. The Atlanta-based boys spawned like any other—a rebellion to the alienating feeling of growing up in a small town at a Christian high school. He could have turned into a drug addict or deadbeat, but Manchester frontman Andy Hull turned it into a career opportunity. Hull's seclusion was no joke: he spent senior year at home school, devoting all his free time to the group's first album, Nobody Sings Anymore. Although it was never officially released, the outfit went on to prove that they know how to music with the release of I'm Like A Virgin Losing a Child. Lyrics are more like stories layered atop fresh composition in this album. Recently released Mean Everything To Nothing carries similar elements with a more orchestrated sound. The album was created live, giving a more authentic vibe and urgency.

They spent more than a year touring with the likes of Kings of Leon, Say Anything and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, serving as perfect practice for a huge round of headlining shows, one of which is tonight at Emo's. With impeccable precision, Hull's unique voice and the band's stellar beats are best displayed live. We're pumped that they are moving on up in the world of indie fame and think now is an excellent time to catch them before they hit supernova-dom. Be sure to make it in time for Audrye Sessions, who present slamming guitar riffs, top-tapping beats and some tear-jerking Elliott Smith covers, before the set along with Fun and Winston Audio.

Is it entirely accurate to describe their music as containing "raw earthy screamo licks"? Half the songs on I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child are considerably down-tempo and almost melancholy. I'll admit that Mean Everything To Nothing certainly picked things up in that regard, but still....

"raw earthy screamo licks" sounds like a new Amy's ice cream.

YUM
