Longhorns Capture Big 12 Baseball Title and Top National Seed
The Texas baseball team has been selected as the No. 1 seed in the NCAA baseball tournament after winning the Big 12 tournament title on Sunday. The Longhorns will host one of 16 regional tournaments that begin Friday.
Texas (41-13-1) used an 11-run fourth inning to run away from 24th-ranked Missouri and capture its second consecutive tournament title and fourth overall.
Dominant pitching has been the Longhorns’ trademark for much of the season, but it was the team’s hitting that stifled much of the drama in Sunday’s game. Texas sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-out grand slam by sophomore Cameron Rupp. Austin Dicharry earned the win in relief of starter Brandon Workman, and shortstop Brandon Loy was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Filling out the top eight national seeds behind Texas are Cal State Fullerton, LSU, North Carolina, Arizona State, UC Irvine, Oklahoma, and Florida.
The Longhorns will face Army in the opening round of the Austin regional, while Texas State will take on ACC tournament champ Boston College.
