Celebrate the Green Movement with Shearwater [Tonight at Red 7]

Tonight two great things come together, in the immortal words of Homer Simpson, "like a monkey in a cowboy suit." Those two great things? The Austin branch of the international bicycle collective movement, the Yellow Bike Project, and Austin’s own Shearwater, the impeccably lush indie music craftsmen. Jonathan Meiburg’s pristine voice makes incantations out of lyrics. With its disciplined swells and polished weight, Shearwater taps an almost medieval resonance, seemingly without anachronism. If you are thinking of going green but just haven’t found the energy, there is plenty of inspiration here.

The Austin Yellow Bike Project is a community supported non-profit volunteer organization focusing on projects to help children, educate the public about human powered transportation, and provide bicycles to those without the means to purchase them. They are impassioned about people-power as a sustainable, healthy, and cost-effective alternative to Austin’s loathsome traffic and means of reducing its carbon footprint. Located at Treasure City Thrift (1720 E. 12th St.), The Yellow Bike Community Bike Shop provides education on bike maintenance and repair free of cost.

To celebrate 12 years of serving the Austin community, the Yellow Bike Project will be throwing a birthday bash at Red 7 featuring Shearwater with The Theater Fire, The Yellow Bike Gospel Choir, and Buttercup. Before the festivities, you can join the Yellow Bike Project in asking the City Council to approve the 2009 Bicycle Master Plan Update. Group bike rides leave from several locations around the city- check their web site for details.
