The longstanding and heavy as hell sludge-rockers The Melvins are making a stop at Emo's this evening to perform their 1993 breakthrough album Houdini in its entirety.
The band first formed in the very early eighties, and over the next decade came to embody the thudding and groove-oriented punk and metal hybrid that eventually spawned a number of offshoots, including the grunge movement. Houdini is The Melvin's major label debut, and best embodies the band's signature darkness and their sense of humor.
Only Buzzo, Crover and bassist Lori Black make the noise on Houdini, but it's a weighty thing, and has aged well since its release. The current incarnation of The Melvins includes Buzzo and Crover, as well as second drummer Coady Willis and bassist Jared Warren (from Big Business).
