Also out this week: Apostle of Hustle's Eats Darkness, which Austinist will review later today. Clues, Eminem, the Field and Monahans also release new records this Tuesday, and there's a slew of reissues and remasters available from Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and the Beach Boys. Bjork also releases Voltaic today, which can be purchased as a 2-CD, 2-DVD box set or a 3-LP, 2-CD, 2-DVD box set.
John Vanderslice Romanian Names (Dead Oceans)Local label Dead Oceans is releasing Vanderslice's latest effort today, and fans of the singer/songwriter will be thrilled upon listening to opening track, "Tremble and Tear". A wistful collection of harmonious vocal layers, Fleetwood Mac-ish acoustic guitars and patient percussion open the album with familiar Vanderslice lightness and attention to detail. Recording for the first time in his home, Vanderslice left the comforts of his studio, Tiny Telephone (in San Fransisco) to work on this record, and the results are brilliant. "Fetal Horses" oozes with early Smiths-like melody, but its complicated subject matter, happily discordant piano and sudden, jerky guitar accompaniment make the song undeniably JV. "D.I.A.L.O." combines more vocal harmonies, synths and addictive melody, this time against a slightly more robust percussive section. Closer "Hard Times" brings everything back around full circle, its spacious reflections lending credence to the common claim that Vanderslice is writing some of the smartest, most emotionally wrought songs out there.

Jarvis Cocker claims that Further Complications was always meant to be more of a group effort. He started things off that way, taking bass player Steve Mackey's advice to spend a little time in Steve Albini's studio during a trip to Chicago. Two songs were recorded to tape, and Cocker fell in love (with the sound and the reasonable price), so the album was finished there. Though Pulp fans -- undoubtedly used to a more slick production -- have squawked at Complications, long-time fans are refreshed by the raw, more human aspect to these songs. One listen to "Angela" and those familiar with Albini's work are instantly aware of his footprint -- the guitars are metallic, the vocals are right in the middle, and the entire piece plops down in your lap like a homeless dog starved for your affection. Cocker's official video for "Angela" continues the trend of taking things back down to a more accessible level -- he performs on a stoop with a mic and some speakers to a small crowd on the street. Watch it here.
