Isis, Pelican, & Tombs @ Emo's [Tuesday]

A three-pronged assault of all things heavy hits Emo’s this Tuesday. First up, Brooklyn trio tombs will do its level best to blast the neighboring Spiro’s nightclub into oblivion with thunderous rawk off its new Winter Horse album. Chicago’s Pelican is next with lengthy doses of instrumental sludge-metal. We’ve been fans of the band ever since 2003’s impressive Australasia. Although Pelican will drop its new EP Ephemeral on Southern Lord, they still appear to be associated with Hydra Head Records (which released the band’s three full-lengths). Pelican is scheduled to release the Champions of Sound 2x7" on Hydra Head (with the likes of Kayo Dot, Zozobra, and Stove Bredsky) this year as well as a split 7" on Temporary Residence Limited with another of our favorites, Young Widows.

Legendary L.A. outfit Isis rounds off this impressive triple bill tonight on the outside stage at Emo’s. The band formed in the late '90s and gained prominence with landmark releases such as Celestial (2000), SGNL>05 (2001), and Oceanic(2002) . Isis has been lauded as a revolutionary force in the hard rock genre for many a year now. Its intricately structured post-metal compositions are melodic and subtle yet heavy and crushing, the vocals are often screamed but mask thematic lyrical content. Currently comprised of Aaron Turner (owner of Hydra Head Records), Aaron Harris, Jeff Caxide, Michael Gallagher, and Bryant Clifford Meyer, the band is on tour in support of the brand new Wavering Radiant record, out now on Mike Patton and Greg Werckman’s Ipecac Recordings and featuring Tool’s Adam Jones on two songs.
