Recasting my comment, I'd like to say that I don't think that because Reagan benefited from the New Deal that he never should have switched from being a liberal Democrat to a Republican. I'm not saying he owed FDR's party blind obedience. But I would have liked to hear him allow that government can do some good things.

Maybe by the same token it would be good if Obama would allow that the free market can do some good things. Maybe he already has.

It goes back to the old philosophy class lesson -- yes I went to an obscure state university -- that you can't make blanket statements. Government can do some good. So can the free market. Martin Luther King in fact said that a truly just society will be a mixture of capitalism and socialism.

Hey, Random, I already know I'm an idiot. Mrs. Fugate first informed both me and Chuck Valdez of that in 1962.

The Rick Perry article also provides a nice analysis of Perry's campaigning style. KBR will need to step up her game in order to keep up with him.

John--I think I remember reading somewhere that Texas receives 88% of every tax dollar it sends to the Feds--more than other large states like California. Not sure whether that's because TX doesn't have a state income tax, and therefore might be more dependent on the feds. Of course, if that's the case, it smacks ever-so-slightly of... OMGSOCIALISM!

Eep! KBR = KBH, of course. Paging Dr. Freud...

John, you're an idiot. Having benefited from a government policy in no way should make you obligated to drop to your knees in praise. If you received a tax cut/tax credit from the Bush administration should you feel obligated to blindly support its tax policy?

You're statement: "I'm proud to say that I didn't vote for him in the early 80s when for some sad reason the rest of my 20-something cohort was falling for him." Sounds similar to a recent election.

I read in a biography of Reagan that he and his family benefitted greatly from FDR's New Deal policies, yet the Great Communicater was always on about the evils of government. I'm proud to say that I didn't vote for him in the early 80s when for some sad reason the rest of my 20-something cohort was falling for him.

Jindahl of Louisiana is another example. While he's talking about the evils of government assistance his underlings are saying that post-Katrina government funds are keeping the state's unemployment rate low and doing other good things.

WTF, Perry? Texans? I rather enjoy being both an American and a Texan! How is this scoring big points among voters? Let me guess, it's all the good-old-boys, who also draw their social security benefits and medicare. *hint* that windfall you assholes enjoy comes from the FEDERAL level! I'm so sick of the very people who whine the most about OMGSOCIALISM, being the very beneficiaries of OMGSOCIALISM!
