Weekend Art Roundup: Last Chance Edition
Tonight, The Portrait Assignment opens at the Flatbed Press Gallery. The show, which runs through June 12th, features self-portraits of artists in a variety of mediums. Participating artists include David Lynch, Bob Schneider, and Shepard Fairey. The event starts at 7pm, and proceeds from the $5 suggested donation will go to the HOPE Project, a non-profit that seeks to involve artists and their talents with social projects around the world.
Tonight from 7-10pm, the UT's Texas Student Photographer Association is presenting a one night show entitled Who, What, Where. that is going to be held at the Perdenales Lofts (2401 E. 6th Street, Suite 2028). The exhibit will feature the photo-journalistic work of twenty-one student photographers. The event will also serve as a silent auction, with twenty-one framed archival prints from Eli Reed, a Magnum Photographer who is a faculty adviser for the students.
Also tonight at 7pm, Domy Books is hosting the release party for the book Exchange Rate: 2008 which documents an international artists exchange that focused on the 2008 presidential election. Artists created and exchanged performance directions based on the campaign, they then interpreted the performance directions they received. Austin's Claire Ruud, editor of ...might be good will give a brief talk based on her contribution to the album and the reception will feature a few performances.
This is the last weekend to see the Blanton's The Birth of the Cool exhibit. The museum is offering public tours of the Midcentury show (on Saturday at 2pm, and on Sunday at 2pm and 3pm) and is extending hours on Saturday until 8pm. The Blanton will also be screening the film Visual Acoustics a documentary study that follows architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Filmmaker Eric Bricker will be on hand to give a Q&A.
The two exhibits at AMOA Downtown are also closing on Sunday, so head over to check out Clifford Ross' photography in Outside Realism and Lordy Rodriguez's altered maps in States of America. Ross' innovative photo techniques are a great supplement to the symbolic re-mapping of America done by Rodriguez.
The Arthouse's annual Five x Seven fundraisers opens to the public on Saturday. The event marks the tenth anniversary of the exhibit and this time around, the show features over 1,000 5-inch by 7-inch works of art donated by Texas artists. Each piece costs $100 and the specific artists are unidentified until you choose make your purchase. Those with a keen eye for local art might recognize the work of Michael Seiben, Debra Broz, or Sam Sanford, among 700 other donating artists.
On Sunday, the Austin Art Garage (at 2200 South Lamar, behind Strut) is hosting Let's Paint! a family friendly hands-on art experience featuring painting demonstrations from local artists. Austin Art Garage is also putting together a raffle for a number of works of art and hopes to raise support for their mission of promoting emerging artists.
