Learning Secrets Presents Kewl Breeze @ Lanai [Tonight]

Local entity Learning Secrets’ hands sure are in a lot of pies. Besides doing PR for a number of bands like Grupo Fantasma and Ume and events ranging from Fun Fun Fun Fest to The DJ Melee, the head honchos, Ian Orth and Jeramy Neugent constantly DJ at choice venues around town. Of late, Learning Secrets has piloted the beats at the Blanton Museum of Art’s B scene at the beginning of this month, the Glass Candy show last weekend at The Mohawk, and of course, their own shindig at Beauty Bar in April.

We caught up with Orth yesterday to learn more about Learning Secrets’ new event called Kewl Breeze at Lanai.

What was the inspiration behind the decision to start the Kewl Breeze residency at Lanai?

Jeramy and I for a long time had been looking for another outlet for what it is we try to do with our LS DJ sets. We love playing at the Beauty Bar, and we're still going to be doing events there, but we were looking for a new venue, a place that would allow us to expand our audience a bit, allow us to bring in our crowd, while at the same time keep their current clientele. We feel like people are a bit too hyper aware of where they will and won’t hang out in Austin, and we really just wanted to attempt to change that by making a night that was more about being at a solid, good looking, welcoming venue, with solid, good looking DJs ... just kidding.

How is Lanai different from the plethora of bars and clubs in Austin that you frequent or DJ at?

I guess the obvious answer is that its a freaking roof top club! And the fact that its right down town, over looking the intersection of 5th and Congress helps to create a certain sort of mood inside club. Its sort of like a tiny mini chunk of Berlin placed in Austin, and the crowd is open to being taken on a bit of journey on the dance floor. The club has this huge retractable ceiling, and open air deck, which just makes it the ideal place for early Texas Summer night dance party.

Between Jeramy and yourself, what type of music can folks expect to hear at the event? Do you two have similar tastes in music or do you feel you guys are complementary?

Jeramy and I both love all kinds of music, and the original idea with LS back during the Whisky Bar days was to turn people on to music they didn’t know, or hadn’t heard in that context before. It was centered around playing dance music to the rock kids, and rock music to the dance kids. In so many other cities around the world these two scenes are able to co-exist, and in Austin, a place built upon community and music, there tends to sometimes be a bit of a drastic separation between these two worlds, which doesn’t seem quite right to us. So the idea with Kewl Breeze is to get back to that original idea of LS, though as the night progresses more and more dance music will creep into the sets. I mean, it’s still a night centered around dance music, but our hope is to present it in a different context.

Jeramy and I have similar tastes for sure, but where I may lean a bit more in the spaced out disco world, Jeramy glides towards a more boogie approach, which helps pull me back to reality, because sometimes I get a bit sidetracked. Also our intern Samantha (Garrett) is going be joining us, and she totally rips on the tables, Austin watch out.

What's next on the Learning Secrets events schedule?

Party-wise we have our fingers tightly clasping some rather heavy spoons which are stirring up some rather thick and full pots of special secret plans. I really don’t want to say too much but if all the wheels keep rolling the way they should, the end of August should be rather epic, but I've really already said too much.

I will say that we're super excited to be bringing our buddy Juan MacLean back at the end of May to turn out a live full band set, along with a live set by The Field at The Mohawk, that night is going to be right massive!
