Music News & Notes: Memorial Day, Bruton & the Frontier (Brothers)

  • Bill Callahan has announced his summer tour dates, including a final show here in Austin at the Parish on July 5.
  • Locals The Frontier Brothers will play at Aces Lounge on May 10, and at the Mohawk on May 24. Check out their blog for more info (and videos!)
  • UTPAC has announced their 2009-2010 performance schedule. Highlights include performances by Bela Fleck, Robert Crumb & Art Spiegelman: A Conversation, hosted by Françoise Mouly, DJ Spooky, The Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, So Percussion, Gilberto Gil and many more.   • The Memorial Day BBQ w/ The Points, No No No Hopes, English Teeth at the Mohawk will take place May 25 - and they will have a dunk tank. $6 includes food and music, so get on that.
  • The Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau announced last week that Ryan Harkrider’s “Nobody Ever Wants To Leave” received the most votes in the inaugural Austin Song Contest. More than 3,800 votes were received online at AustinTexas.org.
  • Guitarist and producer Stephen Bruton passed away last week in Los Angeles after a battle with throat cancer. He is best remembered by friends like Kris Kristofferson, T-Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt and more as a bright light who added a positive spirit to everyone he knew.
