We quizzed Boyer earlier this week on his younger years as well as his career’s highlights.
How did you get involved with Grupo Fantasma? Where do they rank in terms of the talent you've been around over the years?:
Greg Boyer: I met them when Prince invited them to Vegas to open up the show. They have an energy, a hunger in their sound & presentation that a lot of times gets lost when you've "made it." Their blend of so many musical styles doesn't water down the music at all, which is a rarity. Not only are they SUPERB musicians, but a really cool bunch of guys!

You have performed with many exceptional musicians -- what would you consider to be your crowning achievement?
Playing with and doing horn arrangements for the "tribute to Hank Williams, Jr." Not just because of his stature in country music, but because I've never done a country gig before. It came out fabulous!
When did you know you wanted to be a musician?
As a kid, I wanted to be a lot of things: baseball player (up until my first 'high 'n' tight fastball!), artist (cartoonist), electrician (like my grandaddy). But i knew i wanted to play music at around ten when I started out on alto sax. While other kids were learning scales, I was playing jazz standards!
What were some key moments that shaped Greg Boyer the musician?
My first show - a talent show when I was 11. We played The Temptations' "Get Ready". I think we lost because we didn't have an ending. Hearing my junior high school band director comment on some horn arrangements I did when I was around 11 or 12 ("Man, this is good stuff!")
My first gig - Playing tenor sax with The Chosen Few at Evan's Grill. At 15, I was too young to drink, but they let me play anyway!
My first 'real' gig - I think getting the call to play with Parliament/Funkadelic was more memorable than the first show itself! That might be the last time I ran through the house like I'd won the lotto! After that, the "cool" set in.
