This Sunday at the Salvage Vanguard Theater, The Church of the Friendly Ghost is kicking off their inaugural "Lady Friends" concert, the first of four events to showcase dynamic and fresh female voices in the Austin music scene.
"Too rarely are experimental art and new music events in Austin female-centric," write co-curators Alissa DeRubeis and Amanda Lewis. "In order to at least temporarily reject this truth, (and at best, spark a renaissance) the series stems from the desire to experience several evenings of performance from female artists." To that end, they've asked Amanda Mora, Amy Annelle , Aditi Tahiti and Lisa/LA Cameron begin this summer series. Three more performances will take place, with a final show in August.
It's unsurprising that Amy Annelle would be included in this first performance, as she exemplifies a uniqueness in the indie-folk niche that meshes nicely with what Lady Friends is all about. An arresting vocalist and songwriter, Annelle has recorded under her own name, as The Places, and with Ralph White under the moniker Precious Blood.
If Annelle is earthy folk, moonshine and a campfire, Amanda Mora is champagne, a stroll in the sunlight, or something equally as fresh and peaceful. The singer-songwriter just released her debut The Ribbon, a collection of tracks that call to mind both upbeat folk and a little bit of '20s jazz. Anyone with a soft spot for either will not be disappointed.
So far we've seen the more accessible side of this bill, but that comes to a halt with Aditi Tahiti, an artist whose music is simultaneously droning, entrancing, and requisitely weird. Like African chants competing with a collection of other sounds, including more familiar instruments like accordion, violin, and saxophone as well as obscure ones like the dulcetina and a shruti box, Aditi Tahiti's songs are satisfyingly odd and mysterious.
On an equally discordant note will be the final performance by Lisa Cameron, a.k.a. Venison Whirled. The data songstress enjoys feedback and improvisation, and will be joined by vocalist L.A. Cameron for this set.
