Birds Barbershop Celebrates New South Congress Store Tonight

Ahh, Birds—how you've grown in such a short time. It was just over three years ago when we first reported on the fledgling "rock 'n roll barbershop"'s soon-to-be-opened store on South Lamar. In such a short amount of time, the locally-owned shop has extended its reach to North and East Austin and even had its stylists on a reality show. Tonight, Birds welcomes the latest addition to its haircutting empire with a grand opening party at its new store on South Congress.

Like its existing counterparts, the new Birds location features an oversized mural, only this one's in 3-D. Local artist Luther Himes (who, coincidentally, did the artwork for the big summer boat party that we co-sponsored last year) is behind the new retro-inspired work, which needs special blue- and red-tinted glasses to properly view.

Tonight's party runs from 9 to midnight and, in keeping with the 3-D theme, includes viewings of old school 3-D flicks, a 3-D photobooth (?!), assorted video installations, and complementary 3-D glasses to take it all in. Indie hip-hop artist Astronautalis, "local boat party enthusiast" Neiliyo and DJ Andy the Mouth will perform, and yes, expect plenty of Tito's and Lone Star on hand. The shenanigans are free and open to the public.

Birds Barbershop on South Congress is located at 1902 S. Congress.
