Red Light Cameras Catch Cops Running Red Lights [Video]

Red light cameras have been in use for almost a year now; since late May of 2008 they have captured images of over 36 APD officers running red lights, KXAN reports. These officers weren't on calls and didn't have their lights flashing, as APD rules and TxDOT regulations stipulate. And while you may have been caught running a red light by the cameras and received a ticket in the mail, none of these officers have received such punishment.

You can view a series of seven red-light camera videos (including one of a school bus running a red light) here.

And if one of these "officers' were to t-bone a car because the cop ran the red light I bet the other person would have been given a ticket and the cop would have lied as to why they ran it.

APD continues its downward spiral.

The best video is when the cops turn their lights on just as they get to the intersection and then turn them off as soon as they pass through the red light. Side note, I saw a cop put his lights on just to pass people on SloPac this afternoon in order to avoid sitting in traffic. Nothing like making everyone else pull over so you can get a few cars ahead and then pull back in when traffic is moving. Not the first time it has happened.

Whatever, you guys should have seen the frequency with which this happened in Austin during the early-mid 90s. I would see cops turn on their lights just to run a red light a couple of times a week, and not on some compilation from red light cameras. These were also the same cops who didn't pull you over til you were going 20 over the speed limit, and who told you to "go home" when you were driving drunk.

I miss the cops in post 3. That was also when it was legal to have open beers in the car.

There is nothing wrong with running a red light if there is no traffic. It is safe to treat it like a stop sign and make a rolling stop to make sure there is no cross traffic. I treat red lights like stop signs all the time.

Think how silly it would be for the city to pay a ticket fine to itself. "City of Austin I order you to pay a fine to the City of Austin".
