If you have not yet had the thrill of eating at Evita’s Botanitas waaaaay south (6400 South First Street--where beyond-description food is found in a nondescript strip mall), you really should go. Right Now. Because the food that Ruben Rogriguez and his wife Juanita serve up—in particular the six salsas and especially in particular the black been sour cream salsa—is so out of this world that you’ll kick yourself for not having gone sooner. And if you have been, well, it’s time to go again. Not just for the exceptional food, but to show your support for Ruben. He was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and has no insurance and mounting medical expenses.

Another way you can help while having a hell of a good time: Head over to Antone’s on Tuesday, May 12th for an excellent fundraiser/music marathon/food fiesta. Ruben is actually going to prepare an appetizer buffet himself, and Austin’s flan genius Marta Guzman will be creating dessert. There’s going to be a pie auction AND a silent auction with tons of good stuff. You can also chip in cash if you want to. (Checks can be sent to the Ruben Rodriguez Medical Fund; 6400 South 1st, Suite B; Austin, Tx 78745.)

Ruben and his family are exactly the kind of folks that make Austin so very Austin. He’s made life for so many of us so very delicious over the years. Let’s step up and help him out.

Musical Line-up: Leeann Atherton, Sunset Valley Boys, Zydeco Blanco, Texana Dames, Steven Fromholz, Gurf Morlix, Larry Lange & His Lonely Knights, and the Blue Tuesday Band with a Very Special Guest!

Evita's is not that far south. It's 5-10 minutes south of 71 depending on the traffic, and much closer to central Austin than say the Arboretum. If you prefer the bus you can get their via the 3/10 route.

The 5 salsas and pickled vegetables you get while you wait will make the trip seem worthwhile. Make sure to order their awesome lime-cilantro rice. I think I might have to try to brave it for my birthday.

depends on what your definition of "central Austin" is. The Arboretum isn't any further from campus than Evita's.

Great, spicy food worth whatever trip. Easy for me to say, only blocks away. Mole to die for and great personality.
