Giveaway: Chubby Checker & Jerry Cherry @ Threadgill's World HQ [Thursday]

Even as a young child, Ernest Evans a.k.a. Chubby Checker knew he’d be in the music business. He had already formed his first band before he hit his teen years and by the time he was eighteen, Chubby had signed with Cameo Parkway. He went on to garner much fame and popularity with numerous hits, including his 1959 cover of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters’ “The Twist.” In 1961, Chubby won a Grammy Award in the “Best Rock & Rock Recording” category for “Let’s Twist Again.”

It must be a night for alias’ (and mighty good ones at that) as Jerry James Giamundo a.k.a. Jerry Cherry opens in support of Life Is Sweeter… -- purchase it via his MySpace page. Cherry, who is also Chubby’s guitarist, was born in Brooklyn but moved away to Florida at a young age. After forming his current band in 2004, the versatile multi-instrumentalist headed back to New York and the debut album is a result of his various experiences since his return to the city. Cherry has been playing in Chubby’s band since 2008.
