On Sunday, head down to Room 710 and catch Richard Lloyd (Television’s former guitarist) and his current band The Sufimonkey Trio. Lloyd was a member of Television, a vanguard of 70’s punk rock in New York City, from 1973 till 2007. The band was largely dormant after their first two LPs in 1977 and 1978 although they did release one self-titled album in 1992 and few live records as well. Lloyd went on work with John Doe (X), Matthew Sweet, Rocket From The Tombs, besides releasing numerous solo records.
While he was a teenager, Lloyd was fortunate enough to meet Jimi Hendrix through a mutual friend Velvert Turner. Lloyd garnered many valuable tips from Hendrix and also John Lee Hooker, no doubt shaping his own personal virtuosity via advice from the two legends. In fact, Lloyd will be releasing an album of Hendrix covers entitled The Jamie Neverts Story later this year but the CD will be available for purchase at the show. Apparently, “Jamie Neverts” was Lloyd and Turner’s secret name for Hendrix. Watch a clip of The Sufimonkey Trio’s live rendition of “Purple Haze” via YouTube. (Follow the jump for more details on Sunday’s show at Room 710.)
