Pretty & Nice @ Emo's Tonight [Go Free, With Oh No Oh My]

Boston's Pretty & Nice are a slam dunk for Austin show-goers, and their '80s-inspired electro-pop, cat claw sharp and relentless, will keep us riveted at Emo's tonight. The new record Get Young (Hardly Art) is a pummeling pop experience, taking few breaths along the way.

Knocking on familiar doors (think Costello, Squeeze) while adding an undeniable modern flair is their strength, taking the pop archetype and using all the extra space in it with jangly guitars, power-pop drums, a barrage of keys and classic falsetto garage pop vocals. There's a lot happening here - more than immediately presents itself when trying to keep up with "Tora Tora Tora" for the first time. This is what makes us so excited for bands like Pretty & Nice: their formulas are well-tread and visible, but there's depth there and an unfolding greatness that starts to appear as well. How often are dance pop indie records patiently waiting on you to grab everything that's there? It's a wonderful thing.
