Shocking video was released by the Statesman today during the trial of Jerel Lamar, the main subject in an April 2007 APD dashcam video. This two-year-old recording features Lamar firing off shot-after-shot at APD Sgt. Michael Barger, who had responded to a "disturbance with a weapon" call that finally ended with no injuries or casualties after a 13-hour SWAT standoff.
Like something out of a World's Craziest Police Chases show, the video shows Sgt. Barger pulling up to a house on Hyside Drive (near Manor & Springdale) where he yells at the men in the front yard to get on the ground. All oblige, except Lamar, who emerges from the house with a shotgun in hand and begins to fire at the officer's car, leaving bullet holes in the hood and doors as the outgunned cop reverses away to safety.
The trial is currently underway. The defense is claiming Jerel Lamar was suicidal and did not intend to kill Sgt. Barger. However, a witness affidavit from Lamar's brother claims earlier in the day Jerel was talking about going on a shooting spree, killing cops and innocent people, making "Virginia Tech look like a walk in the park" [Statesman]. The jury watched this video on Monday; Jerel Lamar's attempted capital murder trial continues today.
