It's coming: a three-day ear assault up and down Red River St., featuring some of the world's best noise, punk, hardcore and metal bands. This year's Chaos in Tejas lineup is without a doubt the strongest, featuring the legendary Cro-Mags, Cocksparrer, Amebix, and punk heroes-turned-metal activists Propagandhi. There's also some young blood on the scene - sets by the Thermals, Shakey Hands, Harvey Milk and Times New Viking will be scorching stages all over town.

Cro-Mags have been around for, oh, thirty years, starting out in the NY hardcore scene around 1985. Their demo, Age of Quarrel, was an angry collaboration between hardcore and thrash, peaking with "We Gotta Know." Over the years, many feuds, breakups, reunions, subpar releases and hiatuses have overshadowed the band's influence, but John Joseph (original vocalist and remaining original member) came out of the shadows in 2008 for Fun Fest here in Austin, performing as Cro-Mags (jam). The band included drummer Mackey Jayson, Craig Scully of Sick of It All on bass, and AJ Novello of Leeway on guitar. This most recent lineup is the one we're expected so see at Chaos.

Austinist will be bringing you unprecedented coverage of the festival each day, as well as some interviews and introductions to the bands leading up to day one. Don't miss our review of Propagandhi's latest release Supporting Caste, and stay tuned for more - including some giveaways. Heck, let's start now. Follow the jump for the festival's complete lineup and venue list, and register to win a pair of tickets to the Thermals and Shakey Hands show Friday, May 22 at Mohawk. We've already given away one three-day pass to Emo's, and we'll be doing that again very soon.

This contest is closed - stay tuned for more chances to win!
