Sometimes writers like to think of themselves as musical sommeliers; tell us what you’re doing, and we’ll recommend an album to enhance that experience. Austin, if you’re frolicking around in this week’s sunshine breaking and sharing Popsicles, may we suggest you pack the music of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down in your picnic basket? They are the perfect compliment for the playground swagger this weather can bring on, and you can see them live at the Parish Room this Thursday.

Thao Nguyen began playing guitar at the age of 12, practicing in her mother’s laundromat while simultaneously functioning as its coin machine. The greatness of her sound is that it has not only retained, but honed and distilled that youthful spirit of playing music as play time, for the sheer joy of it. It’s that same raw, infectious joy shared between female vocalists in the tradition of Ponytail, Deerhoof, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and their fans.

San Franciscans Thao and the Get Down Stay Down promise to bring some of that city’s golden charm with them to the Parish; this is a fantastic opportunity to sample from the darling of many a 2008 best-of list, their acclaimed We Brave Bee Stings and All. Opening for them will be raucous Canadians Sister Suvi, who cite Wes Anderson as one of their influences, and the silvery-voiced Samantha Crain.
