On a night packed with the potential for multiple sonic eargasms (The Faint, My Bloody Valentine) the fact that Spoon sold out an intimate show at the Scoot weeks in advance should come as little surprise. These one-off, intimate Spoon sets feel like family reunions, bringing together the younger generation of Austin's cool-sters (relative babies in their bassinets from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga) the middle aged yupsters (Kill the Moonlight) and the hipsteratti of 'ol timey pre-condo Austin (A Series of Sneaks). Britt and Co. kicked off the set with a series of new cuts and lept quickly into a relaxed set filled with classics, rarities, and more new songs tied together with a sprinkling of loops and effects to make all of it sound fresh and immediate. Spoon's sound lends itself to these small gatherings and their set list reflected the energy, playing some 20 songs as the clock ticked down to the neighborhood friendly 10:30 curfew. The venue itself was a bit of an enigma, an East Side favorite whose new angular stage lent a sense of immediacy to the music but lacked anything approaching a powerful sound system (unfortunate for those who found themselves stranded in the back). Eventually the hour waned and the throng of buzzing fans and friends drifted into the East Side night, once again a family refreshed and re-united under the name of Spoon.
