Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) at The Compound [Free Tickets]
The Church of the Friendly Ghost is planning a special performance at The Compound this Wednesday, featuring eclectic performer Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu performing solo.
Stewart last toured solo in 2003, but since then Xiu Xiu has become something of a phenomenon amongst fans of unconventional, often disturbing confessional tracks that bridge dance with creep-folk. Stewart will perform with an electric guitar, bird call whistles, and a stylophone. Included in his set list will be old favorites and songs from the forthcoming Xiu Xiu record Dear God, I Hate Myself.
In addition, Stewart and artist David Horvitz are planning to photograph every person at every show, to be posted on the Xiu Xiu tour blog. The best 300 are going to be included in an upcoming book of photography, and the duo have yet another film project that includes audience participation that you can read about here. Performing with Stewart are Orphans, a duo featuring Nick Hennies and Jonathan Horne. You may know Hennies from The Weird Weeds, and Horne from The Plutonium Farmers. According to the press release, "They will perform original folk songs and some old favorites. Expect to see Nick with his resophonic guitar."
