In name alone, the Old Settler’s Music Festival might not sound like the liveliest of hootenannies the Austin area has to offer. But, if you said that, you’d offend the caravans of bluegrass, Americana and roots music fans every year who show up, set up camp and plant themselves in fields of wildflowers to watch some of the most spirited and fun-loving music anyone can squeeze out of two very idle words like “old” and “settler”. The 22nd annual music fest is the perfect chance for these fans, who might be more inclined to sit out SXSW, Fun Fun Fun Fest and Chaos in Tejas, to enjoy Austin’s music fest-friendly attitude. After all, it might come as a bit of a record scratch if the sounds of Devo or Prapagandhi quieted and Texas country/folk music legend Robert Earl Keen (who is the main attraction at Old Settler’s this year) broke into “The Road Goes On Forever”.

This year, the 35-act, 4-stage, 4-day festival taking place at Salt Lick Pavilion and Camp Ben McCulloch will take place April 16-19 and include artists like the BoDeans, The Gourds, the Travelin McCoury’s, The Greencards, Fred Eaglesmith, Hayes Carll, Dave Alvin And The Guilty Women, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, New Monsoon, Ray Wylie Hubbard and more. There will also be plenty of other activities to help shape the event into a well-rounded weekend of music workshops, youth talent competitions, arts & crafts and camping. Whether it’s for the Old Settler’s Music Fest or the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Fest, you might have to head just out of town to get your entertainment fix this weekend.
