You know what might be a great publicity trick, if Great Lake Swimmers (singer/songwriter Tony Dekker plus his touring band) actually swam across Lake Ontario. For these melodic folk rockers to make it the whole 52-kilometer journey, there might have to be a fair amount of training involved. But, who knows, musicians usually have to be pretty resilient and full of moxy. It could also make for some great, out-of-the-box group photos. And, they could look upon it as a team-building exercise. But, being that they have a brand new album out, Lost Channels, and are in the midst of a multi-month, multi-country tour taking them through Austin to Stubb’s Tuesday night Great Lake Swimmers probably don’t really need the extra push at the moment.

The Toronto-based troupe create some of the most alluring and harmonic folk pop that throbs and pumps on minute then hangs on a whisper and a far-off tone the next. But, it all hangs lightly in the air, like a fog just off the ground. Their collage of acoustic guitar hum, crisp guitar string twinkles, keys, harmonica, and outlining drums and bass does a great job of conjuring a desirable, specific mood. Kate Maki will open the night with her twanged-out folk high on pedal steel, mandolin and whatever else her revolving door of contributors will bring.
