Weekend Art Roundup

There are so many great upcoming and ongoing art events taking place this weekend, here's a rundown of the highlights:

Tonight the Blanton is celebrating all things art with yet another B scene party. This month will focus on "art in motion"and will feature the Cohen New Works Festival, a biennial exhibit organized by the UT Department of Theatre and Dance. MFA dance candidates will perform throughout the night in various galleries and our booties will be shakin' along to the tunes of Foot Patrol and DJ Mel and The Learning Secrets. As always, appetizers will be served, a cash bar will be open, and docents will be on hand to lead tours of the Blanton's collection. Tonight's B scene runs from 6 to 10:30pm and admission is $5 for members and $10 for the general public.

On Saturday, Art Seen Alliance is presenting Emerge an ATX Graffiti Art Show benefiting Austin EcoSchool. Saturday's opening party will be held at Spider House and will feature live aerosol painting and laser tagging by local street artists. Participating artists include Matt Rodriguez, Clarisse Noelle, and Sloke, among others. Romeo Navarro's BBOY CITY Performers will be breaking at the show and various DJs and MCs will also perform. Emerge begins at 7pm and donations will be accepted at the door. The work will be on display through April 9th and this weekend's exhibit will serve as a kickoff for the upcoming Pieced Together: All Texas Graffiti Art Show that will tour this spring.

ACC's inaugural celebration of the arts, Carnival ah! continues today through Saturday. The weather should be just perfect for the outdoor festival of free public events that focus on dance, film, music, drama, performance, and visual art. The events are taking place at ACC's Rio Grande Campus and a full schedule and map can be found at the event's homepage.

This is also the last full weekend to check out the ongoing 2009 Texas Biennial which closes on April 11th. The Biennial group exhibitions are on view at Women and Their Work and the Mexican American Cultural Center. Big Medium, Pump Project Art Complex, Mass Gallery, and Okay Mountain are all hosting various solo shows. The temporary outdoor projects that were installed for the Biennial will be in place through the end of the year (with the exception of a few made from less durable materials), but with summer right around the corner, it's a great chance to see the pieces and beat the heat. Check out the Texas Biennial site for gallery hours and maps of all the action.

Jaclyn Pryor's performance piece, floodlines is taking place on Sunday. The event's limited issue of 34 tickets is long sold out, but you can still register to be on the waiting list. Also, Hyde Park neighborhood natives might be able to enjoy some of the performance from the comfort of their own porch swings.

Until next week, you can stay busy and involved with the local art scene by signing up to volunteer for Art City Austin which will take place from April 22nd through the 26th. Art Alliance Austin is looking for volunteers to help set up and help out at the event in exchange for free admission to the festival. The organization is also looking for volunteer cyclists to be love courier's for another incarnation of the interactive installation, pink.
