New Release Tuesday: Flatlanders, Doug Sahm

Flatlanders Hills and Valleys (New West)

Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock are three of Texas' most respected and reliable names in music. All three have had thriving solo careers (as well as other collaborative efforts) since the '70s, but as the Flatlanders, their unique gifts combine to create unforgettable country. In the 30 plus years they've been a group, they've only released a handful of records, and Hills and Valleys is released today after five years of concentration on other efforts. Listeners can expect the kind of album they've come to know and love - no new ground being broken here - but that's always been part of the appeal. Sometimes haunting, sometimes carefree, always wise-beyond-their-years, the trio has offered yet another staggering work of country gold.

Doug Sahm Juke Box Music, The Last Real Texas Blues Band reissues

We're also very excited about another Texas legend getting release this week. Sahm, who passed away in 1999, was a San Antonio native and life-long baseball fan (that matters) who is considered one of the forefathers of Tex-Mex. As part of the Texas Tornados and Sir Douglas Quintet, Sahm celebrated blues, country, rock and soul all while establishing himself as one of Texas' legendary performers. This week, Juke Box Music (1989)and The Last Real Texas Blues Band (1994) see reissue.
