Fairey was slated to create his latest work on the Art Building (ART) at UT Austin today, after approaching the College of Fine Arts earlier in the month with the idea. Unforunately, there wasn't sufficient time to get everything coordinated in advance. The work was to be part of the campus Landmarks program, which brings public art to the university.
"We jumped at the opportunity and set the wheels in motion to take advantage of his offer," says Landmarks director Andrée Bober. "Shepard's work is important and perfectly suited to our program, but it was ambitious to try to pull it off in just one week. Unfortunately, we ran out of time."
To his credit, Fairey stated through his representative that he "would definitely be interested in a future project," even hinting at the possiblility of a more extensive collaboration that would involve facult and staff.
