Day One SXSW Notes: Fewer Lines, Good Times, and Bad Venues
- Overall, the daytime crowds seemed smaller on Red River and East 6th on Wednesday. Few long lines were reported, even for hyped shows like the Paste party at Radio Room, where people were reportedly able to walk right in for M. Ward.
- Vice wins the 'worst sightline' award for the festival so far: attendees at the Peter, Bjorn, and John show reported epic jostling, poor visibility, and long wait times. Keep it in mind when planning your night showcase schedule.
- Rumors abound of a Jane's Addiction appearance tonight at the C3/Playboy party (this is confirmed on their website), Metallica at Stubb's tomorrow night (which is also semi-confirmed), and Kanye West on Saturday at either Fader Fort or Perez Hilton (which is not so much confirmed). We'll soon know the truth!
- Several venues were also pleasant surprises on the lighting and sound front: Radio Room's stage has been moved to a much better location this year and features a nice PA system, and similar changes have taken place at Latitude 30 for the British Music Embassy showcases. Both are far more pleasant spots to catch an act than ever before.
- Enormous lines were in play for the 4AD showcase last night at Central Presbyterian Church, and we suspect you'll see the same thing for Grizzly Bear's set tonight. Be warned: go early or don't bother!
- Our picks for Thursday parties: Rhapsody, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan/Paste, Sounds From Spain, and All That Sparkles. See you there!
