SXSW Film Preview: 500 Days of Summer

We've heard this film has THE soundtrack of the year. But we also heard that about Juno, and then we barfed up our Sunny D, so who knows? 500 Days of Summer stars a couple of cuties named Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. We'd show up to the screening based on that information alone, given the adorableness of Deschanel and the awesomeness that Gordon-Levitt has given us in recent years (Brick, anyone?).

The film tells the story of a relationship which unfolds over a span of 500 Days between a woman, Summer (Deschanel), who doesn't believe in true love, and a man, Tom (Gordon-Levitt), described as a hopeless romantic, who falls in love with her. Their seemingly doomed-from-the-start tale is told from the perspective of Tom, who is influenced by pop music and breaks out into song throughout the movie.

Just like Summer, we're big cynics when it comes to love and romance, but from the looks of this flick, it seems hard not to be won over just a little bit. I mean, we hear that some spontaneous song and dancing occurs to Hall and Oates' "You make my dreams come true" after a particularly amorous moment between Tom and Summer. Even though it's being billed as an anti-romantic comedy, it sounds just charming enough to warm our cynical ol' tickers. --Darcie Duttweiler

500 Days of Summer, which debuted at Sundance, is the closing night film of SXSW 2009 and will screen Saturday, March 21st, at the Paramount. For more information, check out the SXSW Film Festival schedule.
